Paciano is a small town southwest of Perugia in the region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany. We spent a day here on an organic, self-sustainable family farm where we learned to make homemade pasta and share wine with the most gracious hosts. It was roughly an hour or so by train from Rome as we swept through the rolling hills of Tuscany to our destination. We were met by two cars that drove us deeper into the hills to the most peaceful property – the Fontanaro Family Farm. The farm was purchased by the family 40 years ago and when they began, their goal was only a dream. The main house was in ruins and the property needed a lot of work. Since the restoration of their home so many years ago, they have added cottages and cultivated a garden that provides all they need in order to live a healthy, balanced life. The Fontanaro family rents cottages to travelers and they’ve made friends with people from all over the world. Their way of life is inspiring and aside from their lack of horses, their property and lifestyle is quite close to my own personal dream. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this region, you won’t be disappointed if you spend a day (or more) with the Fontanaro family.
